Off-Grid Credenza DX-5518

Our Off-Grid Credenza takes inspiration from the distinctive checkerboard pattern and functional pivot hinge of a Door for an Inner Room made in the late 19th century by an unnamed Baule artist in what is now the Ivory Coast.

With the check pattern originating as far back as 10,000 BC as a by-product of the textile weaving process, we wanted to ensure our interpretation held space for all of the history and references the image brings up, while still creating a functional piece of furniture for contemporary interiors.

product description

Off-Grid Credenza: A Timeless Dialogue Between Ancient Legacy and Contemporary Craft The Off-Grid Credenza is more than a storage piece—it’s a deliberate bridge between millennia of visual history and modern living, drawing deep inspiration from a singular work of African craftsmanship: a late 19th-century inner-room door crafted by an unnamed Baule artist in present-day Ivory Coast. That door, with its striking checkerboard pattern and functional pivot hinge, wasn’t just a barrier; it was a piece of cultural storytelling—and it’s this spirit of purposeful design that we’ve woven into every detail of the credenza. The Baule door's checkerboard motif, in particular, became our touchstone: a pattern that feels both familiar and profound, rooted in far older origins than the door itself. Dating back to 10,000 BC, the checkerboard first emerged as an unintended byproduct of textile weaving—threads crossing in rhythmic grids, a visual echo of human hands at work. For us, honoring this legacy meant more than replicating the pattern; it meant preserving the weight of its history—the way it has quietly persisted across cultures, eras, and mediums, from ancient fabrics to the Baule artist's woodwork. Our interpretation leans into this lineage: the checkerboard here isn’t just a decorative detail, but a nod to the pattern’s role as a universal language of order and connection. Equally vital was the Baule door's pivot hinge—a functional element that married utility with grace. We translated this into the credenza’s hardware: hinges that move with the same quiet precision, turning cabinet doors from a mundane feature into a subtle tribute to the original door’s craftsmanship. The goal was never to create a "replica," but to extract the door's essence—its balance of form and function, its respect for material and story—and reimagine it for contemporary interiors. The result is a credenza that feels both rooted and relevant: it carries the echo of an unnamed artist's vision and the weight of a 12,000-year-old pattern, yet fits seamlessly into modern living rooms, studies, or entryways. Its storage spaces are tailored to today's needs—room for books, media, or everyday essentials—while its design invites pause, a reminder that great furniture can be both useful and meaningful. In the Off-Grid Credenza, the past doesn’t feel distant; it feels like a conversation—one that enriches the present, one piece at a time.
